Leg press numbers vs the squat

It is normal to leg press 2–3× more than you back squat — there is no balance or core demand and the machine angle changes the leverages. Don’t compare leg-press loads to squat or deadlift standards; they are a different measure.

A note on machine accuracy

Leg-press machines vary: plate-loaded sleds, levers and cable units all read differently, and most don’t count the carriage weight. Treat the estimate as a way to track your own progress over time rather than an absolute number.

How much more can you leg press than squat?

Most lifters leg press roughly two to three times their back squat, because the machine removes the balance, bracing and stabiliser demands of a free-weight squat.

Is a leg press 1RM accurate?

Use it to track your own progress rather than to compare gyms. Machines differ in leverage and rarely include the sled’s own weight, so the same plates can feel very different across machines.

What is a one-rep max (1RM)?

Your one-rep max is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single repetition with good form. It is the standard measure of maximal strength and the reference point for setting training percentages.

How many reps should I use for the best estimate?

Use a challenging set you took close to failure at 2–6 reps. That range balances accuracy and safety — heavy enough to predict your max well, light enough to perform without undue risk.

Is it safe to test my true one-rep max?

Maximal singles carry more injury risk and need a thorough warm-up and ideally a spotter. For most lifters, estimating your 1RM with a calculator is safer and accurate enough for programming.
